New Town High School is the third high school where I have been a school counselor, after 18 years in northwest Baltimore County: Nine years at Franklin High and then nine years at Pikesville High. I am a fierce advocate for students to maintain their mental health throughout the college admissions process and to graduate from high school, college- and career-ready, including the social and emotional skills to be productive members of society and in healthy and safe relationships. Part of maintaining that mental health through the college admissions process includes limiting loan debt and setting students up for admission to good-fit colleges, rather than “under-matching” or applying to colleges where the odds are stacked against them.

I attended a very large (3000 students) high school in Philadelphia, and had very few interactions with the “guidance counselors.” This probably led to my decision to attend Penn State University being influenced by my peers rather than my own judgment. It also probably was why I tried six different majors before figuring out that I wanted to be a SCHOOL counselor who proactively sought to assist all students through the developmental process of high school and not make the same mistakes I did.

I love spending time with my wife and two sons, I cook great chicken pot pie and chocolate chip cookies, make my own ice cream, and once in a while I bake rye bread, French bread, and pumpernickel bread. Over the past seven years or so, I’ve held positions on the governing boards of the Baltimore County, Maryland, and American School Counselor Associations, and am always seeking to align my school counseling program with the ASCA National Model.
